Since 1919

The history of the club

Club history since 1919
1914

Fótboltafélag Ísafjarðar — forerunner of Hörður

Fótboltafélag Ísafjarðar was founded in 1914 and was active for ten years. All 12 founding members of Hörður in 1919 had previously played for it. The same year Fótboltafélagið Hvöt was also founded — the country's first women's football club — which lasted two years; women did not take up football again until half a century later.

1919

Founding of the club

Knattspyrnufélagið Hörður was founded in Ísafjörður. The first chairman was Þórhallur Leósson and the treasurer was Dagbjartur Sigurðsson. 12 founding members were listed in later anniversary articles.

1921

First official match

The club's first official match (football) was against Fótboltafélag Ísafjarðar on National Day.

1926

Helgi Guðmundsson takes over

Helgi Guðmundsson took over as chairman of the club and served until 1935.

1928

Hrossataðsvellir and the Gunnar Andrew refereeing affair

In a match between Hörður and Vestri at Hrossataðsvellir (by Eyrargata), the merchant Ólafur Kárason appointed himself linesman in the middle of the game. The referee, shop clerk Gunnar Andrew Jóhannesson, sent him away. After the match, Ólafur sacked Gunnar from his job at his shop, "Björninn".

1931

Youth teams founded

2. and 3. flokkur (youth teams in football) were founded.

1932

The striped Hörður kit in the colours of the flag

Hörður got its classic striped kit — white, red and blue stripes in the colours of the Icelandic flag — around or after 1932, at the earliest. It was first sewn in England and later in Germany. During the war years after 1940, Hörður played for a time in a red shirt with white sleeves and collar (Arsenal style), but was back in the striped kit before the end of the war.

1933

FOUNDING OF THE WOMEN'S HANDBALL SECTION

Knattspyrnufélagið Hörður founds a handball section for girls — one of the oldest of its kind in Iceland. Training has continued almost without interruption since. This is the beginning of the club's handball activity.

1936

Sverrir Guðmundsson chairman

Sverrir Guðmundsson took over as chairman in 1936 and served until 1942.

1937

Athletics section

Hörður founds an athletics section — which soon becomes strong and produces national team athletes.

1939

The Víkingur Cup — first team from outside Reykjavík to win the Icelandic football championship

A joint Ísafjörður team (10 players from Hörður, 4 from Vestri) competing under the Westfjords Sports Council won the Icelandic 1st flokkur championship — the Víkingur Cup — the first time the cup left Reykjavík and the first time a team from outside the capital won an Icelandic football championship. The Ísafjörður players beat KR, Víkingur and Valur and drew with Fram. Goals 11-5, 7 points, an unbeaten tournament. Team leader was Sverrir Guðmundsson, chairman of Hörður.

1940

Gymnastics, wrestling and skiing

Three new sections are added: gymnastics, glíma (Icelandic wrestling) and skiing (in cooperation with Skíðafélag Ísafjarðar; a ski lodge was built).

1940

Hörður in the Icelandic 1st flokkur championship

Hörður entered its own team in the Icelandic 1st flokkur championship in 1940. It beat Fram 5-1 in the first round but lost 4-2 to Valur in the semi-finals, after Halldór Sveinbjörnsson — one of the team's best players — was injured in the match. Valur won the tournament.

1942

Hörður athletes win events

At the 17 June sports meeting in 1942, Hörður had winners in the 100 m (Guðm. L. Þ. Guðmundsson), the long jump, javelin and high jump (Brynjólfur Jónsson) and the shot put (Erling Guðmundsson).

The team played in the red Arsenal-style kit (red shirt, white sleeves and collar, white shorts) that Hörður had adopted during the war years. This kit was then used by the joint Ísafjörður team in the following years.

Following the cooperation between Hörður and Vestri at senior level, a joint Ísafjörður team again took part in the Icelandic football championship in 1952.

1956

Hörður women dominant — men don't train

"The girls trained handball quite a lot, but the boys not at all." The Hörður girls became Westfjords champions (Bíldudalur and Vestri also took part). The men's tournament was also won by Hörður. Jens Kristmannsson became Hörður's chairman in 1960 and held the post until 1982 — a longer term than anyone else in the club's history. He and his brothers Jón and Kristmann lived at Tangagata 29, which Friðrik Bjarnason, at the 50th anniversary, called "Hörður's home in recent years".
