Yet, research using GYTS data from 22 African countries shows that 54% of cigarette smokers, aged 1216, reported purchasing cigarettes from commercial vendors in the month preceding the survey.61 While no studies provide a direct comparison of the cigarette purchasing styles of younger adolescents and adults in African countries, international research suggests that adolescents typically purchase smaller cigarette packaging sizes than their adult counterparts.62 63 Research from African countries shows, further, that loose cigarettes are more commonly sold by street vendors than in formal retail stores, and that differences in the place of purchase and cigarette packaging size affect the unit cost of each cigarette for the buyer.14 Taken together, these findings indicate the need for additional data collection, outside of leveraging existing survey frameworks, to close the information gap on the prices that African youth pay for cigarettes
